Hybrid machine learning/physics-based approach for predicting oxide glass-forming ability

Collin J. Wilkinson et al.

Summary: Predicting the liquid compositions that will vitrify at experimentally accessible quench rates is a significant challenge in condensed matter physics. Various models have been proposed to predict the critical quench rate/glass forming ability, with this study introducing a new method using a toy landscape model combined with machine learning. This approach aims to improve predictions of glass-forming ability by accessing the underlying physics controlling vitrification behavior.

Intermediate structural evolution preceding growing BCC crystal interface in deeply undercooled monatomic metallic liquids

Zhenzhen Yan et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the structural evolution at the crystal/liquid interface in deeply undercooled elemental metallic liquids, focusing on the transition of DILPs preceding the growing BCC crystal and the differences between BCC and FCC forming cases. It was found that under large undercooling, the transition of DILP motifs into the expanding crystal requires cooperative and collective rearrangement with an appreciable energy barrier, while the intermediate structural motifs in FCC-forming cases primarily exist in the form of 1D chains. These differences in transitional motifs and associated activation energy barrier provide insight into the varying crystal growth speeds of BCC and FCC metals in deeply undercooled liquids.

Abnormal dynamic behavior and structural origin of Cu-Ag eutectic melt

B. Q. Wu et al.

Summary: Molecular dynamics simulations were used to investigate dynamic properties and microstructures of Cu-Ag alloy melts, revealing a dynamic crossover phenomenon and breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein relationship in the melts. Unique behaviors of different alloy compositions were observed, providing insights into the dynamics of eutectic melts.

Structural origin of the enhancement in glass-forming ability of binary Ni-Nb metallic glasses

Wenfei Lu et al.

Summary: The study aimed to clarify the structural origin of the enhancement in glass-forming ability of binary NiNb metallic glasses. Ni62.5Nb37.5 alloy exhibited the best glass-forming ability and the densest atomic-packing structure among the four components, with a larger fraction of full icosahedral clusters. The glass structure in Ni62.5Nb37.5 MG was a heterogeneous mixture of interpenetrating icosahedral clusters, forming a chain-like network structure in the matrix. These Ni-centered icosahedra polyhedra played an essential role in controlling GFA.
