Effects of nanostructuration on the electrochemical performance of metallic bioelectrodes

Sahba Mobini et al.

Summary: The use of metallic nanostructures in bioelectrode fabrication is gaining attention due to their potential benefits in surface area and electrochemical performance. This study introduces a versatile fabrication method for metallic nanocolumnar structures (NCs) and thin films (TFs) from Ti, Au, and Pt. The results show that NCs significantly reduce impedance and have higher charge storage capacity compared to TFs. Circuit simulations demonstrate that NCs provide less filtered signals in voltage-controlled systems and safer stimulation conditions in current-controlled systems. Additionally, NCs exhibit more stable electrochemical properties compared to TFs, making them promising for in vivo use.

Summary: This study introduces a fully viscoelastic microelectrode array for electrical stimulation and signal recording of heart and brain activities in vivo, utilizing an alginate matrix and carbon-based nanomaterials encapsulated in a viscoelastic hydrogel. The combination of viscoelastic materials enables the array to closely match the biomechanical properties of soft biological tissues, overcoming previous limitations. The use of hydrogels as outer layers and a hydrogel-based conductor enhanced with carbon nanomaterials allows for the fabrication of electrode arrays compatible with standard electrophysiology platforms.
