Multifunctional superhydrophobic surface with dynamically controllable micro/nanostructures for droplet manipulation and friction control

Hujun Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a switchable superhydrophobic surface was fabricated using a templating approach to control the morphology of micro/nanostructures, enabling reversible transition between high-adhesion superhydrophobic and hydrophobic states. This surface demonstrates multiple functions, serving as a droplet capturer or reaction platform, and the friction coefficient can be switched, showing potential applications in friction control. This work provides a promising multifunctional superhydrophobic platform with dynamically controllable morphology and wetting behaviors for droplet manipulation and friction control applications.

3D Multiscale Micro-/Nanofolds by Femtosecond Laser Intermittent Ablation and Constrained Heating on a Shape Memory Polymer

Cheng Xue et al.

Summary: This study presents a rapid, easy, and highly controllable fabrication strategy for achieving 3D multiscale hierarchical micro/nanofolds on a shape memory polymer surface. By utilizing laser ablation-induced gradient thickness film, the control of nanoparticle film thickness and the formation of multiscale structures are realized. The feature size of folds can be accurately regulated by adjusting laser scanning times and paths, and programmable laser cleaning technology can be used to achieve desired patterns on the micro/nanofolds.

Magneto-Responsive Shutter for On-Demand Droplet Manipulation

Jian Wang et al.

Summary: A novel magneto-responsive shutter (MRS) design is developed for on-demand droplet manipulation, allowing reversible swing and rotation of microblades over a large rotation range with precise control. Different functionalized MRSs enable a wide range of droplet manipulations, such as switchable wettability, directional droplet bounce, droplet distribution, merging, and continuous transport along straight or curved paths. MRS provides a new paradigm for efficient and on-demand multimode droplet manipulation under magnetic actuation.

Spontaneous Adsorption-Induced Salvinia-like Micropillars with High Adhesion

Zhen Shi et al.

Summary: A simple method for fabricating adhesive Salvinia-like micropillars via photolithography and spontaneous adsorption of organic molecules has been reported. The surface shows huge wetting contrast from superhydrophilic to superhydrophobic over exposure time, with a transition from Wenzel state to Cassie-Baxter state. The CeO2-coated surfaces demonstrate high adhesive force with water droplets and have potential applications in microfluidic fields.
