Editors' Choice-Diffusion Media for Cation Contaminant Transport Suppression into Fuel Cell Electrodes

Siddharth Komini Babu et al.

Summary: The corrosion of fuel cell components introduces contaminants that accelerate ionomer degradation, decreasing fuel cell durability. Altering gas diffusion layer wettability can affect cation contaminant transport, with the addition of a hydrophobic layer significantly suppressing contaminant transport and improving fuel cell performance.

Thickness Dependence of Proton-Exchange-Membrane Properties

Xiaoyan Luo et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effect of membrane thickness on the properties of PFSA ionomer membranes, revealing transitions in certain structural features below 10 microns, increased anisotropy in swelling and conductivity. While many properties deviate within 10%-20%, linear correlations are observed between thickness and thermal-mechanical properties and gas permeability.

High-Current Density Durability of Pt/C and PtCo/C Catalysts at Similar Particle Sizes in PEMFCs

Nagappan Ramaswamy et al.

Summary: The durability of carbon supported PtCo-alloy based nanoparticle catalysts is crucial for the longevity of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells in electric vehicle applications. Factors causing performance degradation of PtCo-based cathode catalyst layers over time include ECSA loss, specific activity loss, H+/O-2-transport changes, and Co2+ contamination effects. Accelerated stress test voltage cycling protocol compares the durability of Pt and PtCo catalysts, revealing that PtCo catalysts exhibit larger cell voltage loss at high current densities due to secondary effects of leached Co2+ cations contaminating the electrode ionomer. A 1D performance model quantifies cell voltage losses from various degradation factors of the membrane electrode assembly.

Recent developments in Pt-Co catalysts for proton-exchange membrane fuel cells

Chenyu Wang et al.

Summary: Development of high efficiency and durable Pt-based oxygen reduction reaction catalysts is crucial for proton-exchange membrane fuel cell systems. Pt-Co bimetallic catalysts show promise for fuel cell applications, but further improvements in both performance and durability are necessary to meet market demands. Understanding the relationship between catalyst properties and fuel cell performance, as well as developing more effective methods for customizing Pt-Co catalyst features, is key to maximizing their potential.

Impact of Carbon Support Structure on the Durability of PtCo Electrocatalysts

T. E. O'Brien et al.

Summary: In this study, various low-PtCo MEAs were fabricated and tested using an accelerated stress test, which revealed that porous supports retain more electrochemically-active surface area, leading to higher performance post-AST. However, porous supports also exhibit greater increases in transport resistance, possibly associated with enhanced Co leaching under the AST conditions.

Effect of Particle Size on the Dissolution of Pt3Co/C and Pt/C PEMFC Electrocatalysts

Xiaoping Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the dissolution behavior of Pt and Co in three Pt3Co/C catalysts under potentiostatic and potentiodynamic conditions. It was found that Pt3Co/C has a higher dissolution rate, a higher steady state concentration of dissolved Pt, and a larger change in electrochemically-active surface area (ECA) compared to Pt/C with similar particle sizes, indicating inferior stability of Pt3Co. The higher rates of Pt dissolution for Pt3Co were attributed to higher extents of surface Pt oxidation.

Pt-Co@Pt Octahedral Nanocrystals: Enhancing Their Activity and Durability toward Oxygen Reduction with an Intermetallic Core and an Ultrathin Shell

Minghao Xie et al.

Summary: In this study, Pt-Co@Pt octahedral nanocrystals were successfully synthesized with an intermetallic Pt-Co core and an ultrathin Pt shell dominated by {111} facets on the surface. These nanocrystals showed significantly improved catalytic performance towards the oxygen reduction reaction compared to a commercial Pt/C catalyst, with a mass activity 13.4 times higher and a specific activity 29.5 times higher. Importantly, the mass activity of the nanocrystals only decreased by 21% after 30,000 cycles of accelerated durability testing, indicating their outstanding potential as catalysts for ORR and related reactions.
