Dissecting Biological and Synthetic Soft-Hard Interfaces for Tissue-Like Systems

Yin Fang et al.

Summary: Soft and hard materials at interfaces exhibit mismatched behaviors, and leveraging or mitigating these differences can yield interfacial processes difficult to achieve in pure soft or pure hard phases. This review explores the fundamental chemical roles and principles involved in designing these interfaces, as well as the tools required to uncover the chemical processes in these soft-hard interfacial systems. The proposed soft-hard interaction framework and discussed processes provide potential opportunities for both fundamental studies and applications in tissue-like materials and devices.

The roles of mechanoreceptors in muscle and skin in human proprioception

Vaughan G. Macefield

Summary: The somatosensory nervous system is regulated by specialized mechanoreceptors in muscles, joints, and skin. Joint receptors primarily detect the limits of joint rotation, while cutaneous and muscle spindle afferents can both encode joint movements. Studies on individuals without muscle spindles highlight their importance in sensorimotor control, but also show the redundancy in the system that allows cutaneous afferents to take over.
