Cationic Size Effect Promoting Dissolution of Nitrate Anion in Ester Electrolyte for Lithium-Metal Batteries

Zhijie Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, it is demonstrated that the cationic size effect promotes the dissolution of NO3- in an ester electrolyte and a SEI layer containing Li3N is successfully constructed. By adjusting the size of quaternary ammonium, a high solubility of tetraethylammonium nitrate in ethylene carbonate is achieved, thereby improving the cycling life of lithium metal batteries and lithium-ion batteries.

Liquid electrolyte: The nexus of practical lithium metal batteries

Hansen Wang et al.

Summary: The specific energy of commercial lithium-ion batteries is approaching the theoretical limit. The development of high energy density Li metal batteries is needed for future consumer electronics and electric vehicle markets. Electrolyte engineering can address the issues associated with Li metal batteries, but there are still gaps between the performance of current Li metal batteries and commercial requirements. Further improvements require systematic analysis of existing electrolyte design methodologies.

Solvation chemistry of rare earth nitrates in carbonate electrolyte for advanced lithium metal batteries

Pengcheng Li et al.

Summary: In this study, rare earth metal salts were used as electrolyte additives to optimize the solvation structure of lithium ions and improve the performance of lithium metal anode. The resulting interphase from electrochemical reactions facilitated stable and efficient Li deposition, leading to enhanced safety and cycling stability of lithium metal batteries. This strategy provides a promising approach for the design and optimization of electrolytes for next-generation high-capacity lithium batteries.
