Creating Tunable Quantum Corrals on a Rashba Surface Alloy

Wouter Jolie et al.

Summary: Artificial lattices created from assembled atoms on a surface using scanning tunneling microscopy can be used to create matter with customized electronic, magnetic, and topological properties. In this study, quantum corrals made from iron atoms on the Rashba surface alloy BiCu2 were created and characterized using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. Complex interference patterns were observed, resulting from the interplay of confinement potential size, multiband scattering, and underlying band structure hexagonal warping. These results provide insights into the creation of correlated artificial lattices with nontrivial topology by studying the coupling of quantum corrals and the effect of underlying warping.

Colloidal Synthesis Path to 2D Crystalline Quantum Dot Superlattices

Justin C. Ondry et al.

Summary: By combining colloidal nanocrystal synthesis, self-assembly, and solution phase epitaxial growth techniques, a method for preparing high-quality single dot thick atomically attached quantum dot superlattices with good uniformity has been developed. The ability to independently tune the size and material of the quantum dot core, shell, QD-QD distance, and matrix material allows for control over various properties depending on specific applications.

Coherent control of individual electron spins in a two-dimensional quantum dot array

Pierre-Andre Mortemousque et al.

Summary: Controlling individual quantum objects organized in arrays is essential for scalable quantum information platforms. By integrating nearest-neighbour coupled semiconductor quantum dots in a 3 x 3 array with finely tuned virtual gate control, 2D coherent spin control has been achieved. Recent efforts in controlling electron spins in quantum dot arrays have led to the realization of quantum simulators and multielectron spin-coherent manipulations. However, demonstrating 2D scaling with a high connectivity of such implementations remains a challenge.

Sub-5 nm Lithography with Single GeV Heavy Ions Using Inorganic Resist

Qing Liu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a process for single-digit nanometer lithography using single heavy ions, achieving ultrahigh-aspect-ratio nanofilaments with sub-5 nm feature size. Control experiments and simulation analysis indicate that both the HSQ resist and heavy ions contribute to the high-resolution capabilities for sub-5 nm fabrication. The development of heavy-ion technology is expected to further enhance patterning resolution at the single-digit nanometer scale.

Vis-NIR photodetector with microsecond response enabled by 2D bismuth/Si(111) heterojunction

Zhaoying Dang et al.

Summary: Experimental research progress has been reported on the optoelectronic properties of epitaxial 2D bismuth grown on Si(111) substrate. The 2D Bi/Si(111) heterolayer shows impressive photodetection performance, with high responsivity and fast response time. This work paves the way for developing photodetectors based on the heterointerface between group VA Xene and Si(111) with rapid switching behavior and adequate photoresponsivity.

Tandra Ghoshal et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the fabrication of sub-20 nm gate-all-around silicon nanowire field effect transistor structures using self-assembly techniques with a block-copolymer-assisted hard mask approach. This involved creating nanopatterned Si feature arrays on a topographically patterned substrate, achieving dot and line nano-patterns through a thermo-solvent approach utilizing polystyrene-b-poly-(ethylene oxide) block copolymers.

Multimaterial Self-Aligned Nanopatterning by Simultaneous Adjacent Thin Film Deposition and Etching

Seung Keun Song et al.

Summary: The sizes of printed components in electronic circuits are approaching 10 nm, but variability in feature alignment during photolithography is a fundamental barrier for continued device scaling. This work introduces low-temperature chemically self-aligned film growth via simultaneous thin film deposition and etching in adjacent regions on a nanopatterned surface, avoiding nucleation defects. Opportunities for low-temperature bottom-up self-aligned patterning for electronic and other nanoscale systems are provided by simultaneous deposition and etching.

Nanoscale Turing patterns in a bismuth monolayer

Yuki Fuseya et al.

Summary: Research has shown that strained atomic bismuth monolayers assembled on the surface of NbSe2 can display Turing patterns, indicating that Turing patterns can occur at the atomic scale in hard condensed-matter systems. The macroscopic patterns seen in biological systems, such as animal skin, can also be described by Turing's reaction-diffusion theory.

Bias dependence and defect analysis of Bi on Si(111) √3 x √3 β-phase

Longxing Chi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the Bi on Si(111) root 3 x root 3 beta-phase surface reconstruction using scanning tunneling microscopy, revealing unique electronic properties such as sizable spin-orbit coupling. By combining experimental data with density-functional theory calculations, it is confirmed that the surface structures originate from specific electronic states outside the bulk band gap. Analysis of defect images and associated densities of states provides further insight into the electronic structure of the surface, highlighting the presence of quantum-dotlike localized states associated with defect structures.
