Mechanically exfoliated MoS2 nanoflakes for optimizing the thermoelectric performance of SrTiO3-based ceramic composites

Jilong Huang et al.

Summary: MoS2 nanoflake, as a semiconductor material with low thermal conductivity, has the potential to optimize the performance of thermoelectric materials. In this study, a mechanical exfoliation method was proposed to mass produce MoS2 nanoflakes, and MoS2/SLNT composites were fabricated by spark plasma sintering. It was found that the heterojunctions formed at MoS2/SLNT interfaces effectively enhanced the Seebeck coefficient without significantly reducing the electrical conductivity. Meanwhile, the thermal conductivity of the composites was significantly decreased due to the phonon scattering induced large thermal resistance at MoS2/SLNT interfaces. The maximum ZT value of 0.24 was achieved in the 1.5 vol% MoS2/SLNT composite, which is 26% higher than the pristine matrix. This work lays the foundation for the application of transition metal dichalcogenides in modulating thermoelectric materials.

Graphene controlled phase evolution in Sr-deficient Sr(Ti, Nb)O3 thermoelectric ceramics

Jia Li et al.

Summary: Correlated phase and microstructural evolution in Sr-deficient Sr(Ti, Nb)O-3 (STNO) thermoelectric ceramics with different fractions of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) were systematically investigated using electron microscopies. It was found that RGO has a unique reducing effect on the microstructure of doped SrTiO3 with Sr deficiency, affecting the formation of precipitates and the variation of Sr deficiency.

Enhanced atomic ordering leads to high thermoelectric performance in AgSbTe2

Subhajit Roychowdhury et al.

Summary: By optimizing atomic disorder and cadmium doping in polycrystalline silver antimony telluride, high thermoelectric performance with near room-temperature figure of merit ZT of around 1.5 and maximum ZT of around 2.6 at 573 kelvin is achieved. This strategy of enhancing cationic ordering while reducing lattice thermal conductivity is applicable to most thermoelectric materials with inherent atomic disorder.

Discordant Gd and Electronic Band Flattening Synergistically Induce High Thermoelectric Performance in n-type PbTe

Moinak Dutta et al.

Summary: By doping Gd into PbTe, the Seebeck coefficient of n-type PbTe was synergistically enhanced and the lattice thermal conductivity was lowered, resulting in high thermoelectric performance. Gd doping in PbTe increases the electron effective mass by flattening the conduction band, significantly improving the Seebeck coefficient. Gd also induces a low energy nearly flat optical phonon mode, drastically increasing the phonon scattering rate and lowering lattice thermal conductivity.
