Sharp scattering spectra induced brilliant and directional structural colors

Zhipeng Meng et al.

Summary: The study focused on generating sharp scattering spectra with narrow full width at half-maximum using ordered films made of SiO2 spheres. Rainbow structural color was achieved under nonparallel light irradiation, and full-spectrum structural color patterns were fabricated using a spraying method. Furthermore, a composite structure was constructed to explore possibilities in the field of flexible transparent displays.

Fast water-response double-inverse opal films with brilliant structural color

Changtong Zhou et al.

Summary: The construction of novel photonic structures enables the creation of stimuli-responsive functional materials. The innovative water-response double-inverse opal (WRDIO) films, fabricated by introducing polystyrene microspheres into the inverse-opal backbone, exhibit fast response time and brilliant structural color. The deprotonation of carboxyl groups in the inverse-opal backbone enhances hydrophilicity, facilitating water penetration, while high-proportioned carboxylic anions cause rapid swelling of WRDIO film in water. The broad-spectrum shifting of WRDIO film depends on the composition of the ethanol-water mixture, showing potential applications in anti-counterfeiting and sensors.

Artificial Chameleon Skin with Super-Sensitive Thermal and Mechanochromic Response

Yue Wu et al.

Summary: The dynamic camouflage of chameleons relies on the nonclose-packed structure and large refractive index contrast, which inspired researchers to construct photonic crystals with similar characteristics using a two-step filling strategy. The designed photonic crystal demonstrates high sensitivity to external stimuli, similar to the skin of chameleons.
