Zinn's zonule

Steven Bassnett

Summary: The Zonule of Zinn, or ciliary zonule, is a complex system of extracellular fibers in the eye that centers the lens and flattens it during the process of disaccommodation. These fibers are primarily composed of microfibrils, with elastic properties likely stemming from lateral interactions between them. Rupture of these fibers can lead to lens dislocation, which may result from trauma or other eye diseases, including genetic conditions. The Zonule of Zinn not only plays a role in accommodation but also potentially regulates lens size and shape, globe size, and corneal topology.
