Rise of the Machines? Examining the Influence of Social Bots on a Political Discussion Network

Loni Hagen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the activity of social bots in a Twitter network discussing the Special Counsel investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. elections. The findings suggest that bots can influence political discussion networks by creating virtual communities, diminishing the influence of traditional actors, and amplifying pro-Trump messaging.
