Impacts of land use/land cover dynamics on land surface temperature using geospatial techniques in Anger River Sub-basin, Western Ethiopia

Mitiku Badasa Moisa et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of land use and land cover changes on land surface temperature (LST) in the Anger River Sub-basin, western Ethiopia from 1991 to 2020. The results showed that LST significantly increased during this period, with the expansion of agricultural land being the main contributing factor. Conversion of forest and grassland to agricultural land, as well as forest conversion to bare land, also led to increased LST. Hence, environmental protection measures are needed to address the increasing trend of LST and rapid land use change in the study area.

Multiple indices-based assessment of agricultural drought: A case study in Gilgel Gibe Sub-basin, Southern Ethiopia

Mitiku Badasa Moisa et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess agricultural drought using vegetation condition index (VCI) and vegetation health index (VHI), and found that extreme drought is increasing in the Gilgel Gibe sub-basin. Therefore, protecting forests and other natural resources is essential to alleviate the negative impact of agricultural drought on socioeconomic and well-being.

Evidences of climate change presences in the wettest parts of southwest Ethiopia

Dessalegn Obsi Gemeda et al.

Summary: The study found that the wettest parts of Ethiopia are experiencing a decline in annual rainfall in most areas, along with a statistically significant increase in mean maximum and minimum temperatures at several stations. The main rainy season has seen a decrease in rainfall in the majority of the study area, while the autumn season has shown an increasing trend. The results suggest that climate change is impacting the region, leading to warmer temperatures and changes in rainfall patterns.

Analysis of urban expansion and land use/land cover changes using geospatial techniques: a case of Addis Ababa City, Ethiopia

Mitiku Badasa Moisa et al.

Summary: The study analyzed urban expansion and land use changes in Addis Ababa City from 1990 to 2020, revealing an increase in built-up area at the expense of agricultural land and grassland. This trend is driven by rapid urban expansion and declining agricultural and grassland areas in the city's periphery.

Soil erosion risk assessment for prioritization of sub-watershed: the case of Chogo Watershed, Horo Guduru Wollega, Ethiopia

Daniel Assefa Negash et al.

Summary: This study estimated the annual soil loss in the study area through soil data and satellite images, revealing that soil erosion problems are mainly caused by mis-management of agricultural land and overexploitation of natural resources. The importance of soil erosion risk assessment was emphasized to influence policy makers in implementing effective mitigation measures.

Impact of land-use and land-cover change on soil erosion using the RUSLE model and the geographic information system: a case of Temeji watershed, Western Ethiopia

Mitiku Badasa Moisa et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of land-use change on soil erosion in the Temeji watershed, finding that the conversion of grassland and forest into cultivated land leads to high soil loss, and over-exploitation of forest and grasslands for agricultural purposes is directly related to the severity of soil loss.
