On not-at-issueness in pictures

Maria Esipova

Summary: The author's study reveals similarities between certain pictorial content and natural language modifiers, suggesting that the distinction between at-issue and not-at-issue content should be analyzed in terms of restricting vs. non-restricting modification. This finding highlights substantial parallels between pictures and natural language in terms of pragmatic reasoning and compositional structuring of meaning.
