Empirical comparison of Shariah-compliant vs conventional mutual fund performance

Naseem Al Rahahleh et al.

Summary: This paper examines the performance of locally focused equity mutual funds (LFEFs) in Saudi Arabia compared to benchmark funds. The study investigates whether Shariah-compliant mutual funds (SMFs) and conventional mutual funds (CMFs) outperform their respective benchmarks. Using the Carhart four-factor model, the research finds that LFEFs significantly outperformed their benchmark during the full sample period and low-volatility period. CMFs also outperformed their benchmark during these periods. However, SMFs neither outperformed nor underperformed their benchmark. This research provides valuable insights for policymakers and faith-based-sensitive investors.

Estimating the cost of equity for the regulated energy and infrastructure sectors in India

Kewal Singh et al.

Summary: The cost of equity capital is crucial for regulators and investors, with a single-factor model showing limited efficacy in estimating stock returns. This study is the first to use three asset pricing models to estimate the cost of equity for the Indian energy and infrastructure sectors, providing insights for policymakers and regulators in setting reasonable rates of return. The study reveals that the reasonable rate of return calculated using the capital asset pricing model could be higher than the estimated cost of equity, and different asset pricing models can lead to varying estimates of return spread in regulated sectors.

The determinants of the lending interest rate in a cost-based approach: Theoretical model and empirical analysis

Serge Patrick Amvella Motaze

Summary: Researchers have developed a mathematical model to determine lending interest rates for financial institutions based on cost considerations. The model isolates four key components of credit costs and allows for the determination of a minimum interest rate for profitability. Empirical analysis over a 15-year period supports the model's suggestions that interest rates follow the floor interest rate. The model's contribution lies in its potential use in policies that aim to improve credit conditions by reducing credit costs rather than imposing lower interest rates.

Asymmetry and Leverage with News Impact Curve Perspective in Australian Stock Returns' Volatility during COVID-19

Najam Iqbal et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of COVID-19 on Australian stock return volatility and the influence of negative and positive news using GARCH and EGARCH models. The results suggest that the EGARCH model is better at capturing asymmetry and leverage in estimating stock return volatility.
