Links between adverse childhood experiences, psychopathological symptoms and recidivism risk in juvenile delinquents

Cinzia Guarnaccia et al.

Summary: Research in developmental psycho-criminology shows that conduct disorders and deviant behaviors are often associated with traumatic and adverse developmental experiences. This study aimed to further explore the relationship between adverse childhood experiences, psychopathological symptoms, and criminality by analyzing risk factors in a group of adolescents and young adults in a juvenile detention center in southern Italy. The findings support the idea that the accumulation of risk factors plays a significant role in recidivism, and emphasize the importance of the contexts and emotional environments in which individuals grow up. The study also highlights the link between paternal antipathy and hostile behaviors and their potential impact on triggering delinquent trajectories. However, the study's limitations include a small sample size and the absence of longitudinal measures.

The Influence of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on the Functional Impairment of Justice-Involved Adolescents: A Comparison of Baseline to Follow-Up Reports of Adversity

Jacquelynn F. Duron et al.

Summary: This study found that the accumulation of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) increases the risk of functional impairment in justice-involved adolescents, with baseline ACEs having a greater impact on functioning. The importance of assessing ACEs over time in adolescents in the juvenile justice system is highlighted, as well as considering the different characteristics and experiences of youth encountering functional impairment. The study also discusses the implications of offering trauma-informed services to disrupt the effects of adversity on adolescents' functioning.

The Influence of Familial and Peer Social Support on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Among Black Girls in Juvenile Correctional Facilities

Camille R. Quinn et al.

Summary: Black girls with juvenile justice involvement in the United States experience higher rates of PTSD symptoms when they have higher levels of caregiver support, negative peer norms, lower self-esteem, and lower future orientation. Treatment programs for this population should take a multisystemic approach, involving caregivers and peers, and focusing on improving constructs such as self-esteem and hopefulness.
