A longitudinal investigation of integration/multiculturalism policies and attitudes towards immigrants in European countries

David Bartram et al.

Summary: Recent studies have found that integration and multiculturalism policies can help soften anti-immigrant attitudes among the population, but a longitudinal analysis suggests that these policies do not lead to a reduction in anti-immigration sentiment at the country level. The findings from cross-sectional studies seem to suffer from significant omitted variable bias.

Deflecting Privilege: Class Identity and the Intergenerational Self

Sam Friedman et al.

Summary: Through origin stories that downplay their own privileged backgrounds and forge connections to working-class extended family histories, individuals from privileged class backgrounds create a self-identity that deflects and obscures their class privilege. They construct a narrative of upward mobility 'against the odds' that erases the structural privileges that have influenced their trajectory.

Cross-Sectional Model-Building for Research on Subjective Well-Being: Gaining Clarity on Control Variables

Summary: This article highlights the importance of controlling confounding variables and not controlling intervening variables or colliders when making decisions on control variables in quantitative analysis. It introduces a framework unfamiliar to many social scientists and demonstrates how it can be applied to analyzing causal questions effectively.
