In crisis, we pray: Religiosity and the COVID-19 pandemic

Summary: The COVID-19 crisis has led to a significant increase in prayer activities globally, particularly in Europe and the Americas. People of different religious beliefs, income levels, and levels of inequality have participated, but Buddhists did not show a noticeable increase. People pray to cope with adversity.

Summary: The study found that the association between religious struggles and psychological distress is mediated by psychosocial resources such as social support, self-esteem, and the sense of control. These resources have significant indirect effects on emotional distress but not on somatization.

A decrease in sense of meaning in life was found to mediate this relationship. This study provides implications for future research on religion and health across the life course.
