Nanoformulations and their mode of action in insects: a review of biological interactions

Kiran Shahzad et al.

Summary: Nanoparticles can affect pigmentation and cuticle integrity externally, induce immune responses and alter gene expression internally, leading to changes in protein, lipid, and carbohydrate metabolism, along with cellular toxicity that impairs insect development and reproduction. In addition, disruption of nutrient intake, production of reactive oxygen species, and altered biochemical activity can incapacitate insects, while some nanoparticles may have growth-promoting effects and reduce nontarget toxicity.

Encapsulation of Carlina acaulis essential oil and carlina oxide to develop long-lasting mosquito larvicides: microemulsions versus nanoemulsions

Roman Pavela et al.

Summary: Carlina acaulis root essential oil is an effective mosquito larvicide with carlina oxide as its main component. Formulations containing this essential oil showed high larvicidal activity against Culex quinquefasciatus while exhibiting low toxicity to human cell lines and Wistar rats. The study highlights the potential of C. acaulis essential oil microemulsion for developing safe and long-lasting larvicides.
