Emotion Regulation as a Transdiagnostic Risk Factor for (Non)Clinical Adolescents' Internalizing and Externalizing Psychopathology: Investigating the Intervening Role of Psychological Need Experiences

Katrijn Brenning et al.

Summary: This study found that dysfunctional emotion regulation was positively linked to internalizing and externalizing problems in adolescents, and need frustration partially mediated the relationship between emotion regulation and psychopathology. These findings suggest that both emotion regulation and basic psychological needs may play a transdiagnostic role in adolescents' internalizing and externalizing symptoms.

Navigating the Social Environment in Adolescence: The Role of Social Brain Development

Jack L. Andrews et al.

Summary: Successful navigation of the social environment during adolescence depends on social cognitive processes such as mentalizing and resistance to peer influence. However, heightened susceptibility to peer influence and hypersensitivity to social rejection in adolescents can lead to risky behavior. Interventions aimed at improving prosocial behavior and emotion regulation abilities hold promise in reducing the risk of poor mental health in adolescents.

Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Genetically Informed Research: Associations Between Parent Anxiety and Offspring Internalizing Problems

Yasmin Ahmadzadeh et al.

Summary: The study found that prenatal anxiety exposure is not significantly associated with offspring internalizing outcomes, while postnatal anxiety exposure may be causally linked to concurrent offspring internalizing through non-genetic pathways. Further research is needed to explore longitudinal stability, child-to-parent effects, as well as the influence of moderators and methodological biases.

Depressive Symptoms and Loneliness in Early Adolescence: The Role of Empathy and Emotional Self-Efficacy

Emanuela Calandri et al.

Summary: The study found that high empathy and low emotional self-efficacy were associated with greater loneliness and depressive symptoms in early adolescents. Emotional self-efficacy moderated the relationship between empathy and loneliness, and for girls, between empathy and depressive symptoms. Loneliness did not mediate the relationship between emotional predictors (empathy and emotional self-efficacy) and depressive symptoms.
