Racial and Ethnic Differences in Presentation and Outcomes for Patients Hospitalized With COVID-19 Findings From the American Heart Association's COVID-19 Cardiovascular Disease Registry

Summary: The study aimed to identify racial and ethnic differences in presentation and outcomes for COVID-19 patients hospitalized in the United States. Despite adjusting for sociodemographic and clinical differences, Black and Hispanic patients had a greater burden of mortality and morbidity compared to non-Hispanic White patients. Although in-hospital mortality and major adverse cardiovascular events did not differ by race/ethnicity after adjustment, disparities in health outcomes still exist among different racial and ethnic groups in COVID-19 hospitalizations.

More efforts are needed to address this problem, such as using trial screening logs, conducting qualitative studies to understand patient attitudes, avoiding age-based exclusion criteria, and increasing female leadership in stroke clinical trials.

Male gender is a predictor of higher mortality in hospitalized adults with COVID-19

Summary: This study analyzed the characteristics and outcomes of male compared to female adults with COVID-19 in US academic centers. Males with COVID-19 showed higher rates of hypertension, diabetes, renal failure, heart failure, and liver disease, while females were more likely to be obese and have chronic pulmonary disease. Male COVID-19 patients had higher in-hospital mortality rates, higher rates of respiratory intubation, and longer hospital stays compared to females.
