Local approximate Gaussian process regression for data-driven constitutive models: development and comparison with neural networks

Jan N. Fuhg et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a method that combines data-driven constitutive prediction and macroscopic calculations, ensuring prediction accuracy and reliability by using local approximate Gaussian process regression (laGPR). A modified Newton-Raphson approach specific to laGPR is proposed to solve the global structural problem.

Polyconvex anisotropic hyperelasticity with neural networks

Dominik K. Klein et al.

Summary: In this paper, two machine learning based constitutive models for finite deformations are proposed. They are hyperelastic, anisotropic, fulfill the polyconvexity condition, and have excellent predictive and generalization capabilities. The models are calibrated with challenging simulation data and show good results, demonstrating their reliability and applicability.

A hybrid approach for the efficient computation of polycrystalline yield loci with the accuracy of the crystal plasticity finite element method

Abhishek Biswas et al.

Summary: This study presents a hybrid method that combines the classical crystallographic yield locus method (CYL) with the crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM) to determine the anisotropic yield locus (YL) of a material. The hybrid method is shown to produce reliable results for diverse crystallographic textures, even with pronounced plastic anisotropy. The calibrated CYL method is used to construct a smooth yield function that can potentially be used in standard continuum plasticity methods for finite element analysis.

Interval and fuzzy physics-informed neural networks for uncertain fields

Jan N. Fuhg et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a method using physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) to solve partial differential equations involving fuzzy and interval fields. The proposed interval physics-informed neural networks (iPINNs) and fuzzy physics-informed neural networks (fPINNs) show promising results in obtaining bounded solutions without the need for specifying correlation length or performing Monte-Carlo simulations.

Model-data-driven constitutive responses: Application to a multiscale computational framework

Jan Niklas Fuhg et al.

Summary: Computational multiscale methods have been used in engineering problems to analyze and derive constitutive responses, but their application in a nonlinear framework may be limited by high computational costs, numerical difficulties, and inaccuracies. A hybrid methodology combining classical constitutive laws, data-driven correction, and computational multiscale approaches is presented in this paper. This approach improves the versatility and accuracy compared to classical model-driven or purely data-driven techniques.

On the Localization of Plastic Strain in Microtextured Regions of Ti-6Al-4V

Jonathan Cappola et al.

Summary: The equiaxed microstructure of Ti-6Al-4V alloy contains alpha-phase grains of varying orientations. The presence of microtextured regions can adversely affect the mechanical properties of the alloy, particularly quasi-static and fatigue properties. Studies have shown that orientation spread within microtextured regions facilitates strain localization, and the intensity of microtexture in neighboring regions further influences the extent of strain localization.

Summary: The algorithm presented in this study uses sparse autoencoders to reduce the dimensionality of a physical system and predict its time evolution using deep neural networks. It ensures the conservation of total energy and entropy inequality, making it suitable for both conservative and dissipative systems. The method has been tested in examples from fluid and solid mechanics.

Parsimonious neural networks learn interpretable physical laws

Saaketh Desai et al.

Summary: Machine learning plays a growing role in the physical sciences, with ongoing progress in incorporating domain knowledge into models. This study introduces parsimonious neural networks (PNNs) that use neural networks and evolutionary optimization to find models that balance accuracy and simplicity. The versatility of this approach is demonstrated in developing models for classical mechanics and predicting material melting temperatures, showing both interpretability and improved relationships compared to traditional laws such as Newton's second law and Lindemann melting law.

A framework for data-driven solution and parameter estimation of PDEs using conditional generative adversarial networks

Teeratorn Kadeethum et al.

Summary: The study utilizes cGAN for image-to-image translation to learn forward and inverse solution operators of PDEs. By parameterizing spatially heterogeneous coefficients, steady-state solutions of coupled hydromechanical processes are achieved. The framework provides significant speed-up compared to finite-element solvers, with lower errors in both forward and inverse modeling.
