How kids manage self-directed programming projects: Strategies and structures

Karen Brennan

Summary: This study found that children make progress in self-directed programming projects through strategies such as experimenting, planning, persevering, and collaborating. The application of structuration theory reveals that these strategies are connected to three key structures-personal interests, access to others, and time-which have enabling and inhibiting effects on their actions.

Direct numeracy activities and early math skills: Math language as a mediator

Yemimah A. King et al.

Summary: Several studies suggest the significance of the home numeracy environment in developing early numeracy skills, as well as the importance of preschoolers' understanding of math language in predicting numeracy skills. This study indicates that math language mediates the relationship between direct home numeracy activities and numeracy skills, highlighting the role of math language knowledge in explaining the connection between home numeracy environment and early numeracy.

The Associations Between Computational Thinking and Creativity: The Role of Personal Characteristics

Rotem Israel-Fishelson et al.

Summary: The study revealed interesting associations between computational thinking and creativity constructs, with positive relationships found between each of the two creativity constructs and computational thinking acquisition, as well as between the two creativity constructs themselves. Additionally, girls were found to be more creative on both creativity measures. Other differences associated with school affiliation, prior coding knowledge, and technology affinity were also discussed.
