Postfeminist performance of domesticity and motherhood during the COVID-19 global lockdown: the case of Chiara Ferragni

Rocio Palomeque Recio

Summary: Analyzing the behavior of cultural actors, such as social media influencers, can provide insight into current social trends. Using the case study of influencer Chiara Ferragni, this article argues that her portrayal of domesticity and motherhood during the Italian lockdown can be seen as an intensification of postfeminist ideals. This may contribute to reinforced gender roles amidst social anxieties. The article also examines the global pandemic as a collective trauma that leads to a crisis of meaning and the reconstruction of social categories. Postfeminist performances of cultural actors should be carefully reassessed in light of these new constructs.
