Why we should monitor disparities in old-age mortality with the modal age at death

Viorela Diaconu et al.

Summary: This study examines the disparities in mortality among different occupational classes in Finland using indicators such as the modal age at death (M) and life expectancy. Results show that while there is an increasing gap in life expectancy at 65 and 75, the disparities in M remain relatively stable.

The Cross-sectional Average Inequality in Lifespan (CAL+): A Lifespan Variation Measure That Reflects the Mortality Histories of Cohorts

Marilia R. Nepomuceno et al.

Summary: Lifespan variation is an important metric of mortality, and this study proposes a new measure called CAL(+) which combines the mortality histories of all cohorts using a cross-sectional approach. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the CAL(+) measure in exploring lifespan differences between age groups and cohorts in low-mortality countries or regions.

Linking retirement age to life expectancy does not lessen the demographic implications of unequal lifespans

Jesus-Adrian Alvarez et al.

Summary: As individuals are living longer and spending more time in retirement, the sustainability of pension systems is challenged. Some countries have linked retirement age to life expectancy in order to address this issue. However, the study finds that such linkage increases uncertainty in financial costs related to longevity risk, and socio-economic disparities in lifespans persist regardless of retirement age.

Outsurvival as a measure of the inequality of lifespans between two populations

James W. Vaupel et al.

Summary: This study aims to devise a clear measure for the differences in lifespan distributions between two populations. The proposed outsurvival statistic, phi (φ), measures the probability differences in individuals from populations with different life expectancies. The outsurvival probability and underdog probability provide a nuanced and widely applicable perspective on the inequality of lifespans between populations.
