Partitioned beta diversity patterns of plants across sharp and distinct boundaries of quartz habitat islands

Pia Maria Eibes et al.

Summary: The study of plant species richness on quartz islands in the Knersvlakte of South Africa revealed high beta diversity, with species turnover being the dominant component. Soil pH differences and distinct plant communities were found to have a significant linear relationship with species dissimilarity, while electrical conductivity and soil depth did not show a significant impact. The spatial distinctiveness of quartz islands with sharp boundaries contributes to high beta diversity through species turnover, indicating high levels of adaptation of local plant communities and the potential permeability of matrix boundaries.

What defines insularity for plants in edaphic islands?

Francisco E. Mendez-Castro et al.

Summary: The theory of island biogeography suggests that size and isolation play a crucial role in determining biodiversity on islands. Debate has recently arisen regarding whether terrestrial island-like systems function similarly to true islands. The challenge of identifying the effect of insularity in terrestrial systems lies in recognizing species source(s) and measuring isolation, which is not as straightforward as for true islands.
