Does social defeat cause negative symptoms? A prospective study in a multi-national community sample

Edo S. Jaya et al.

Summary: The study found a bi-directional longitudinal relationship between ostracism and negative symptoms in schizophrenia, with ostracism predicting the development of negative symptoms over time and negative symptoms increasing the likelihood of experiencing ostracism. This highlights the importance of negative symptoms in schizophrenia and the need to further investigate potential moderators in this mechanism.

Socioemotional mechanisms of loneliness in subclinical psychosis

Logan D. Leathem et al.

Summary: Loneliness is a significant predictor of health outcomes in both the general population and individuals across the psychosis spectrum. This study found that subclinical psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) are associated with increased levels of loneliness, which is mediated by alterations in socioemotional processing. Anxiety/depression and emotion processing efficiency independently mediate the relationship between PLEs and loneliness, while inefficient emotion recognition and higher levels of perceived rejection mediate the association in a serial manner. These findings have important implications for treatment and research on social functioning in subclinical psychosis.
