Childhood Maltreatment and Relationship Quality: A Review of Type of Abuse and Mediating and Protective Factors

Summary: Childhood maltreatment, including neglect, sexual, emotional, or physical abuse, is associated with lower relationship quality for both men and women, with mediating factors such as psychological distress and insecure attachment. Protective factors, like good coping strategies and early secure attachment, play a role in mitigating the negative effects, while partner characteristics do not. Further research is needed to explore the dyadic effects of various forms of CM on relationship quality and to identify potential mediating and protective factors for prevention programs.

Childhood trauma and adult mental disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis of longitudinal cohort studies

Summary: The review of various studies shows a significant association between childhood or adolescent exposure to bullying, emotional abuse, family violence, and parental loss, and the development of mental disorders in adulthood. Exposure to multiple forms of maltreatment was found to increase the odds of developing a mental disorder by more than three times. Childhood and adolescence are highlighted as critical periods for the risk of later mental illness and important time frames for intervention strategies.

Summary: Background Schema Therapy is based on the theory that trauma and neglect in childhood lead to early maladaptive schemas and psychopathology in adulthood. The aim of this review was to evaluate support for this theory by synthesizing the literature on childhood adversity and schemas. The results suggest that childhood experiences such as emotional neglect and abuse are related to early maladaptive schemas in adulthood.
