Quantifying Perceived Political Bias of Newspapers through a Document Classification Technique

Hyungsuc Kang et al.

Summary: Although some political bias is inevitable in the media, strong bias can have a significant impact on society and public opinion formation. This research presents a data-driven approach to quantifying the political bias in media content. By utilizing doc2vec for document classification and social data from Facebook posts, a model for analyzing bias is developed and applied to major South Korean newspapers, demonstrating quantitatively the existence of significant political bias in line with perceived bias.

Moving Away From Partisanship: Diversifying the Motives Behind Political Polarization

Tianru Guan et al.

Summary: Most current academic work on political polarization focuses on partisanship as the main driver, but this essay argues for a broader perspective by identifying populism, system-justifying attitudes, and state-sponsored ideologies as the primary motives behind polarization. By exploring these alternative motives, the article offers insights into reducing polarization through a grounded, processual-relational analysis of the world.
