Is the Black-White mental health paradox consistent across age, gender, and psychiatric disorders?

Courtney S. Thomas Tobin et al.

Summary: This study examined whether the Black-White mental health paradox is consistent across gender, age groups, and psychiatric disorders. The results showed that the paradox generally holds true across different age and gender groups, as well as for lifetime mood, anxiety, and substance use disorders. The only exception was middle-aged Black men, who had higher odds of lifetime substance use disorder compared to their White male peers of the same age, but this difference was no longer statistically significant after accounting for education and employment. The study also found that older Blacks and Whites had more similar mental disorders compared to younger individuals, suggesting that the Black-White mental health differences are most pronounced among younger age groups.

The Impact of Traumatic Events on Mental Health Among Older African American and Black Caribbean Adults

Jasmin R. Brooks et al.

Summary: This study examined the frequency and impact of traumatic events on the mental health of older African American and Black Caribbean adults. Findings indicate that approximately 80% of older African Americans and Black Caribbeans reported experiencing a traumatic event at some point in their lifetime. Among African Americans assaultive violence was associated with more depressive symptoms, lower levels of life satisfaction, and lower levels of happiness. This was not the case among Black Caribbeans.

The Association between Racial Discrimination, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, and Cardiovascular-Related Conditions Among Non-Hispanic Blacks: Results from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (NESARC-III)

Amelia R. Gavin et al.

Summary: The study found a positive association between racial discrimination, PTSD, and cardiovascular-related conditions among non-Hispanic Blacks. PTSD significantly mediated the relationship between racial discrimination and cardiovascular conditions. Efforts to improve cardiovascular health among this population should focus on culturally competent screening and treatment for PTSD, as well as addressing institutional policies that negatively impact health opportunities for Black individuals.

Jordana L. Sommer et al.

Summary: This study examined the association between PTSD and physical health conditions across different adult age categories and found that regardless of age, PTSD was linked to various physical health issues, especially among younger and middle-aged adults. The results may provide insights for targeted screening and intervention strategies to reduce the risk of physical health conditions among adults with PTSD.

Association of Racial Discrimination With Neural Response to Threat in Black Women in the US Exposed to Trauma

Negar Fani et al.

Summary: This study found that experiences of racial discrimination are associated with disproportionately greater response in brain regions related to emotion regulation, fear inhibition, and visual attention, as well as affecting performance in affective attentional control tasks. Frequent experiences of racism may enhance attentional and regulatory responses to trauma-related stressors, leading to heightened modulation of regulatory resources.

Racial Discrimination is Associated with Acute Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms and Predicts Future Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Severity in Trauma-Exposed Black Adults in the United States

Claire M. Bird et al.

Summary: In the United States, Black residents exposed to traumatic events have a higher risk of developing PTSD with more severe symptoms compared to White counterparts. Past racial discrimination is significantly associated with acute posttraumatic stress symptoms and predicts future PTSD symptoms. This highlights the impact of racial discrimination on mental health and the call for racism to be classified as a public health crisis.
