Mapping the evidence of intimate partner violence among women living with HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa: a scoping review

Mengistu Meskele et al.

Summary: This scoping review mapped evidence of intimate partner violence (IPV) against women living with HIV/AIDS in Africa. The study found that HIV-positive women are at considerable risk of IPV after disclosing their serostatus to a male partner. Promoting action to reduce IPV among both HIV-positive and HIV-negative women, and determining healthcare workers' IPV screening experience, is necessary based on the implications from the findings.

Ansley B. Lemons-Lyn et al.

Summary: Intimate partner violence is prevalent among people with diagnosed HIV, with 26.3% reporting ever experiencing it and 4.4% reporting experiencing it in the past 12 months. Recent intimate partner violence is associated with higher HIV transmission risk behaviors and unmet supportive service needs. People who recently experienced intimate partner violence were less likely to be engaged in routine HIV care but more likely to seek emergency care services and have poor HIV clinical outcomes.

Violence, HIV Risks, and Polysubstance Use Among HIV-Positive People Who Inject Drugs in Ukraine

Jungeun Olivia Lee et al.

Summary: Violence experiences, including intimate partner violence and police-perpetrated violence, were found to be associated with HIV risk and substance use behaviors in a cohort of HIV-positive people who inject drugs in Ukraine. Gender and socioeconomic status did not show significant moderation effects in the links between violence exposure and HIV risk and polysubstance use behaviors. Addressing both individual and structural violence through trauma-informed prevention approaches could help reduce HIV risks in this population.
