Empathic Validation in Physician-Patient Communication: An Approach to Conveying Empathy for Problems With Uncertain Solutions

Summary: Interest in systematic approaches to improving clinical empathy is increasing, with a focus on empathic validation as a communication strategy. Empathic validations must demonstrate shared understanding and support the patient's position to be effective, particularly in situations where there is no medical solution. Empathic validation is a useful approach for older adults as it does not rely on their ability to create empathic opportunities.

Asking about self-harm and suicide in primary care: Moral and practical dimensions
