Empathic Validation in Physician-Patient Communication: An Approach to Conveying Empathy for Problems With Uncertain Solutions

Caroline K. Tietbohl

Summary: Interest in systematic approaches to improving clinical empathy is increasing, with a focus on empathic validation as a communication strategy. Empathic validations must demonstrate shared understanding and support the patient's position to be effective, particularly in situations where there is no medical solution. Empathic validation is a useful approach for older adults as it does not rely on their ability to create empathic opportunities.

Asking about self-harm and suicide in primary care: Moral and practical dimensions

Joseph Ford et al.

Summary: This study found that doctors tend to frame questions about self-harm towards a 'no' response, amalgamate questions around self-harm and suicide, and limit dialogue around patients' experiences and concerns. To improve discussions, asking about self-harm and suicide separately, encouraging discussion when responses are ambiguous, and validating distressing thoughts are recommended.

When do patients exercise their right to refuse treatment? A conversation analytic study of decision-making trajectories in UK neurology outpatient consultations

Merran Toerien

Summary: This paper investigates the scenarios when patients refuse treatment in neurology outpatient consultations, and finds that the majority of refusal cases occur after neurologists have initiated decision-making based on patients' views, rather than engaging in a duel. In practice, patient refusals are typically respected and do not escalate into confrontations.

Negative stance towards treatment in psychosocial assessments: The role of personalised recommendations in promoting acceptance

Clara Bergen et al.

Summary: By asking about the patient's experience/understanding, accepting or validating the reasons for their negative stance, and showing how their reasons are incorporated in the recommendation, practitioners are able to shift the patient from a negative stance to acceptance. In this process, acceptance and validation play an indispensable role in addressing the patient's concerns about treatment.
