Associations Between Witnessing and Perpetrating Online Hate Speech Among Adolescents: Testing Moderation Effects of Moral Disengagement and Empathy

Summary: This study investigates the correlates of adolescents' involvement in online hate speech as perpetrators and examines the moderation effects of empathy and moral disengagement on this relationship. The findings highlight the positive association between moral disengagement and witnessing hate speech, as well as the negative association between empathy and perpetration. Moreover, empathy and moral disengagement moderate the link between witnessing and perpetrating hate speech.

Cyberbullying in Adolescents: Resilience as a Protective Factor of Mental Health Outcomes

Summary: This study found that resilience plays an important role in moderating the relationship between cyberbullying victimization and mental health outcomes in adolescents. Adolescents with high levels of resilience showed fewer symptoms of depression and a smaller reduction in life satisfaction when experiencing cyberbullying.

Cyberbullying victimization and depression among adolescents: A meta-analysis

Online correlates of cyberhate involvement among young people from ten European countries: An application of the Routine Activity and Problem Behaviour Theory

Summary: Recent evidence suggests that young people in Europe are facing hateful content on the Internet. This study aimed to test Routine Activity Theory and Problem Behavior Theory to understand young people's involvement in cyberhate. The results showed that cyberhate victimization was associated with lack of capable guardianship and exposure to potential offenders, while cyberhate perpetration was linked to several online problem behaviors. The findings can be used to develop intervention and prevention programs at different levels.

Does victimization predict cyberbullying perpetration? Examining depression as a mediator and self-control as a moderator

Summary: The study found that adolescents who experience online and offline victimization are more likely to develop depression, leading to an increased likelihood of engaging in cyberbullying. Self-control moderates the relationship between online and offline victimization and depression, but does not affect the relationship between depression and cyberbullying.

Youths' coping with cyberhate: Roles of parental mediation and family support

Summary: This study examined the relationship between parental mediation of internet use and adolescents' problem-focused coping strategies for cyberhate victimization, while considering family support as a moderator of these relationships. Findings showed that instructive parental mediation had a positive effect on adolescents' coping strategies, while restrictive parental mediation had a negative impact. Family support strengthened the positive relationship between instructive parental mediation and adolescents' coping strategies, and attenuated the negative impact of restrictive parental mediation.
