Loneliness in Gender-Diverse and Sexual Orientation-Diverse Adolescents: Measurement Invariance Analyses and Between-Group Comparisons

Riley McDanal et al.

Summary: Youth loneliness is a risk factor for adverse psychosocial outcomes, and LGBTQ+ youths may be at higher risk due to minority stressors. Our study confirms the structure of the UCLA Loneliness Scale and shows that loneliness scores can be meaningfully compared across gender and sexual identities.

Loneliness and Social Isolation During the COVID-19 Pandemic A Systematic Review Enriched With Empirical Evidence From a Large-Scale Diary Study

Susanne Buecker et al.

Summary: The global COVID-19 pandemic outbreak has greatly changed people's lives, leading to more research on loneliness and social isolation. Studies suggest that loneliness increased in the months or years before the pandemic, while it remained stable or decreased in the weeks or days before the pandemic; the quality of social relationships was perceived worse during the pandemic, and the quantity of social interactions was reported to decrease linearly over time.

A Systematic Review of the Development and Psychometric Properties of Loneliness Measures for Children and Adolescents

Aimee Cole et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the three most commonly used measures of loneliness for children and adolescents, pointing out that the UCLA Loneliness Scale is the most popular measure for adolescents, but it lacks robust psychometric properties for that group; while for children, the CLS seems more suitable. Additionally, the review also identifies gaps in the development of loneliness measurement methods.

Lonely Me, Lonely You: Loneliness and the Longitudinal Course of Relationship Satisfaction

Marcus Mund et al.

Summary: Individuals feel lonely when there is a gap between the desired closeness and intimacy in social relationships and the actual experience. Partner relationships are found to be the most powerful protective factor against loneliness. The study found that loneliness has significant negative impacts on relationship satisfaction and its development over time, with congruently low levels of loneliness and declines in loneliness associated with increases in relationship satisfaction.
