Demand response and other demand side management techniques for district heating: A review

Elisa Guelpa et al.

Summary: This paper is the first survey on the use of demand side application in district heating networks, clarifying the terminology and implementation stages. Demand side management is considered as a great technique for district heating management, achieving benefits such as peak shaving, doubled load factor, and reduction of primary energy needs.

Actors and agency in district heating: Engaging with middle actor perspectives through future workshops

Anders Horsbol et al.

Summary: By focusing on professionals in the district heating sector, this paper advocates for a middle out approach in order to understand their crucial role in driving the transition towards green energy. Future workshops are proposed as a method to facilitate discussions among professionals on the potentials and challenges of a green transition, particularly in relation to buildings. The findings highlight the professionals' perspectives on agency, challenges, and future communication and cooperation in a green transition.

My apartment is cold! Household perceptions of indoor climate and demand-side management in Sweden

Sofie Hagejard et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the thermal perception among tenants in Sweden connected to district heating, with centrally controlled load shifts applied in some buildings. Results showed that indoor temperatures were perceived as low and control over heating was insufficient. Despite no significant impact on thermal sensation and satisfaction, fewer participants were willing to accept temperature variations to save energy after the trial. Factors influencing perception and acceptance of demand-side management in residential space heating include set indoor climate conditions, timing and magnitude of load shifts, individual control, and communication.
