Being emotionally moved is associated with phasic physiological calming during tonic physiological arousal from pleasant tears

Kazuma Mori et al.

Summary: The experience of being emotionally moved involves a sense of pleasure coupled with psychophysiological relief from tension. Tears predict the experience of being moved, while chills do not. Psychoacoustic features of music cannot explain the physiological response of chills and tears.

Unraveling the Temporal Dynamics of Reward Signals in Music-Induced Pleasure with TMS

Ernest Mas-Herrero et al.

Summary: Music-induced pleasure is associated with the engagement of cortico-striatal pathways, specifically the NAcc, and is modulated by changes in activity in these regions. Excitation of fronto-striatal pathways enhances subjective reports of music-induced pleasure, while inhibition leads to reduction. Changes in NAcc activity predict modulation of both hedonic and motivational responses, with TMS-induced alterations in functional connectivity between brain regions predicting the degree of modulation of hedonic responses.

Reward and emotion: an affective neuroscience

David Sander et al.

Summary: Pleasure and reward are essential for motivation, learning, feeling, and allostasis, but the relationship between reward and emotion lacks consensus. Future research should focus on mapping the similarities and differences in stimuli and mechanisms involved in reward processing and emotional processing, advocating for an integrative affective sciences approach.
