The role of parental emotion reactivity and regulation in child maltreatment and maltreatment risk: A meta-analytic review*

Iris Lavi et al.

Summary: Research has shown that parents who maltreat or are at risk of maltreating their children exhibit significantly higher issues with emotion reactivity and regulation compared to non-maltreating parents. They experience more negative emotions, display more negative emotion behavior, and are more dysregulated, indicating overall worse measures of reactivity and regulation. These findings provide important guidance for future studies on child maltreatment.

Parents' Maltreatment Histories, Dimensions of Emotion Regulation, and Connections to Offspring Self-Regulation: A Sex-Specific Transmission Pathway

Kimberly R. Osborne et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between parental maltreatment histories and child self-regulatory capacity, finding that parental maltreatment histories were significantly associated with parental emotion regulation, which indirectly influenced child physiological self-regulation. Gender may play a moderating role in this association, with daughters showing greater dysregulation than sons.
