Energy poverty and education: Fresh evidence from a panel of developing countries

Nicholas Apergis et al.

Summary: This study empirically assesses the impact of education on energy poverty using the lens of human capital theory. The findings suggest that education has a negative impact on energy poverty, which remains robust under different approximations of energy poverty. These results have significant implications for policymakers and government officials.

Climate risk and corporate environmental performance: Empirical evidence from China

Xiaohang Ren et al.

Summary: This study creatively examines the impact of extreme national climate risk on corporate environmental performance in China and proposes an innovative approach based on economic input-output life cycle assessment to evaluate corporate carbon footprint. The findings suggest that an increase in national climate risk will lead to higher corporate carbon emissions, particularly when the climate risk score is in the high-risk range. Additionally, the effects of climate risk on corporate carbon performance vary among companies with different geographical locations and environmental restrictions. The research provides insights for relevant business leaders, policymakers, and investors in enhancing related policies.

Carbon prices forecasting in quantiles

Xiaohang Ren et al.

Summary: This paper proposes two new methods, the Quantile Group LASSO and the Quantile Group SCAD models, for evaluating the predictability of a large group of factors on carbon futures returns. The models select the most powerful predictors through dimension-reduction mechanisms and consider the potential differences in statistically significant predictors for different quantiles of carbon returns. The findings show that the proposed models outperform competing ones in terms of prediction accuracy and estimate the impacts of selected predictors on the carbon price distribution using a quantile approach.

Energy poverty, health and education outcomes: Evidence from the developing world

Rajabrata Banerjee et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of energy poverty on health and education outcomes in 50 developing countries from 1990-2017. Lower energy poverty is associated with better health and education outcomes, with access to electricity showing a stronger positive effect on development outcomes. Threshold regression estimates show varying effects of energy development index on life expectancy and infant mortality rates based on poverty levels and income per capita.

Energy poverty, development outcomes, and transition to green energy

Philip Kofi Adom et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of energy poverty and green energy transition on development outcomes, finding that green energy partially offsets the negative effects of energy poverty. In the short term, renewable energy transitions may lead to inflated energy costs, but these risks are likely to diminish in the long run.

Racial disparities in energy poverty in the United States

Qiang Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that overall racial inequality in residential energy consumption/cost has remained relatively stable over the past 25 years in the U.S., but African-American households are more vulnerable to energy poverty compared to white and Asian households. Surprisingly, the proportion of white households experiencing energy poverty has seen the greatest increase from 1990 to 2015.

Spillover and dynamic effects of energy transition and economic growth on carbon dioxide emissions for the European Union: A dynamic spatial panel model

Xiaohang Ren et al.

Summary: Based on the empirical results, the study shows that the traditional dynamic panel model over-estimates the parameters, neglecting indirect impacts, while a significant positive spatial spillover of CO2 emissions from neighboring countries to the local country is recognized. Economic growth has positive impacts on CO2 emissions, while renewable energy has negative influences and natural gas has positive impacts. The study also provides policy recommendations for cooperation with CO2 reduction policies, promotion of green economy, renewable energy, and substitution of natural gas in the future.
