Reforestation reversals and forest transitions

Sean Sloan

Summary: Forest transitions in Latin America have experienced "reversals", marked by significant declines in forest cover following reforestation. These reversals challenge traditional forest transition theories and are predominant in regional forest transition epicenters. Systematic historical case studies are crucial for a comprehensive understanding of forest transitions and reversals.

Ten golden rules for reforestation to optimize carbon sequestration, biodiversity recovery and livelihood benefits

Alice Di Sacco et al.

Summary: Urgent solutions are needed to address global climate change, with ambitious tree-planting initiatives aiming to sequester carbon and compensate for CO2 emissions. However, poorly planned tree planting could have negative impacts. We propose 10 golden rules based on recent ecological research to maximize carbon sequestration and biodiversity recovery while improving livelihoods.

Global urban reforestation can be an important natural climate solution

Hoong Chen Teo et al.

Summary: This study found that approximately 17.6% of urban areas globally are suitable for reforestation, which could offset 82.4 +/- 25.7 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions. 1189 cities have the potential to offset more than 25% of their city carbon emissions through reforestation. Urban natural climate solutions should be prioritized on global and local agendas.

Summary: Planting trees is a globally significant forest improvement and management activity, but short project durations present challenges for assessing long-term impacts. This study identifies predictive proxy indicators (PPIs) associated with successful long-term forest plantation outcomes in community tree-planting efforts in northern India.

Mitigation or Myth? Impacts of Hydropower Development and Compensatory Afforestation on forest ecosystems in the high Himalayas

Manshi Asher et al.

Summary: The fragile ecosystems of the Himalayas have undergone significant land-use changes due to the proliferation of hydropower development and compensatory afforestation policies, with long-term consequences remaining under-researched. The study found that construction activities for hydropower projects and compensatory afforestation plantations have adversely impacted forest biodiversity and local land usage, causing significant harm to fragile ecosystems and communities dependent on them.
