Leading by Example in Socially Driven Organizations: The Effect of Transparent Leader Compensation Contracts on Following

Karl Schuhmacher et al.

Summary: This study conducts two experiments to investigate the interplay between leadership and contracting in socially driven organizations. It finds that under non-transparent contracts, leader contributions positively influence follower contributions, demonstrating effective leading by example. However, under transparent contracts, the positive effect of leader contributions on follower contributions is weakened by an increase in variable compensation intensity and/or fixed compensation amount in the leader's contract.

Small business tax compliance under third-party reporting

Bibek Adhikari et al.

Summary: The study shows that third-party income reporting has a modest impact on tax compliance for small businesses, particularly in terms of reported income. However, there is no significant effect on deductions. Smaller firms, businesses in business-to-consumer industries, and partnerships are more affected by this change, with reported income increasing significantly, partially offset by increased deductions, resulting in a modest increase in tax compliance.

How Bad Apples Promote Bad Barrels: Unethical Leader Behavior and the Selective Attrition Effect

Robert Cialdini et al.

Summary: The research reveals that unethical leader behavior creates an unethical climate in workgroups, leading to increased turnover intentions and malfeasance. The study also identifies a selective attrition effect, where unethical leader behavior retains group members who are more comfortable with dishonesty. Psychological distress is found to be the mechanism driving group members' turnover intentions.
