Brain aging and speech perception: Effects of background noise and talker variability

Pascale Tremblay et al.

Summary: Speech perception in noise declines with age, potentially due to cortical thinning in auditory and speech processing regions, as well as regions involved in executive control. Older adults show reduced brain response to noise in the right superior temporal cortex, but no difference in activation patterns related to talker variability compared to younger adults.

Peripheral deficits and phase-locking declines in aging adults

Samira Anderson et al.

Summary: Age-related difficulties in speech understanding may result from a decrease in neural representation of speech sounds, potentially due to loss of outer hair cells or auditory nerve fibers. This study evaluated the peripheral contributors to phase-locking strength in younger and older listeners, finding that outer hair cell function contributes to phase locking but temporal processing deficits may be independent of outer hair cell function.
