Sleep Disturbances and Sensory Sensitivities Co-Vary in a Longitudinal Manner in Pre-School Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Liora Manelis-Baram et al.

Summary: Through a 1-3 year study of 103 preschool children with ASD, it was found that longitudinal changes in sleep disturbances specifically correlated with changes in sensory sensitivities. This relationship was not found with changes in other sensory processing domains or core ASD symptoms, indicating a potential common underlying physiological mechanism.

The impact of atypical sensory processing on adaptive functioning within and beyond autism: The role of familial factors

Janina Neufeld et al.

Summary: The study found that individuals with atypical sensory processing, especially those diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, tend to have reduced adaptive functioning. Sensory sensitivity and sensation avoiding are linked to decreased adaptive functioning across individuals, while sensation seeking behaviors might interfere with adaptive functioning specifically in individuals with autism spectrum disorder. The influence of familial factors on these associations highlights the complex relationship between sensory processing and adaptive skills.

Swim Program Pilot for Children with Autism: Impact on Behaviors and Health

Norah L. Johnson et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the behaviors of children with autism and the psychological health of parents before and after a swimming program. Results indicated a decrease in challenging behaviors in children and an improvement in parents' perception of general health. Parents were satisfied with the instructors and felt that the program helped improve family dynamics.

Weighted Blankets and Sleep Quality in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Single-Subject Design

Bryan M. Gee et al.

Summary: The study investigated the efficacy of weighted blankets on sleep quality in children with autism spectrum disorder, finding minimal changes in sleep patterns but potential improvements in morning mood and time to fall asleep. Further research is needed to explore the effectiveness of weighted blankets in improving sleep quality among children with autism.

Tactile Processing and Quality of Sleep in Autism Spectrum Disorders

Dominika Jamiol-Milc et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between tactile stimuli modulation disorders and insomnia prevalence in individuals with ASD. The findings suggest that under-responsivity toward tactile stimuli may contribute to poor sleep quality in children with ASD.
