Rigid and Deformable Image Registration for Radiation Therapy: A Self-Study Evaluation Guide for NRG Oncology Clinical Trial Participation

Yi Rong et al.

Summary: The NRG Oncology Medical Physics subcommittee formed a working group to investigate feasible workflows for a self-study credentialing process of image registration commissioning. Methods and Materials: The AAPM Task Group 132 report provides guidelines for quality assurance of image registration algorithms in radiation therapy. Results and Conclusions: Recommendations on digital phantom/data sets and analytical software access were provided for institutions to evaluate commercial imaging systems for coregistration in radiation therapy treatment planning.

Clinical use, challenges, and barriers to implementation of deformable image registration in radiotherapy - the need for guidance and QA tools

Mohammad Hussein et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the clinical use of deformable image registration (DIR) in radiotherapy in the UK, finding that most centers have access to commercial software for DIR, some are already using DIR clinically, and others have plans for future implementation. The main application is contour propagation, with key challenges including determining satisfactory DIR, lack of resources, and variability in commissioning and QA tests. Recommendations include additional guidelines, training, tools, and metrics for successful implementation of DIR.
