Microstructure of graphene oxide-silica-reinforced OPC composites: Image-based characterization and nano-identification through deep learning

Junlin Lin et al.

Summary: This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the microstructure of cement reinforced with graphene oxide (GO)-silica using backscattered electron (BSE) images. The effects of GO on microstructural refinement are demonstrated, and deep learning is shown to be effective in extracting representative features. This provides a new pathway for characterizing nano-reinforced cement composites.

Predicting the permeability of consolidated silty clay via digital soil reconstruction

Yanming Liu et al.

Summary: Numerical modelling of pore structure of porous media is a powerful tool for predicting soil permeability and transport properties for geoengineers, but its accuracy relies heavily on microstructural information. This study reconstructed statistically equivalent 3D micropore structures of soil samples using a digital soil model, finding a linear correlation between tortuosity factor and voxel size for simulation. The permeability of soil samples computed using the ABAQUS CFD module was comparable to results from constant head permeability test.

Macro-meso-micro experimental studies of calcined clay limestone cement (LC3) paste subjected to elevated temperature

Run-Sheng Lin et al.

Summary: The study experimentally investigates the macro properties, meso properties, and micro properties of paste specimens with different limestone and calcined clay contents at elevated temperatures. The strength of all samples increases at 300 degrees C, with the LC3 ternary blended pastes showing a more significant increase due to the formation of katoite and further hydration of binders. After treatments at 550 and 900 degrees C, the reduction in strengths of the LC3 samples is greater than that of the plain paste.

The reaction between metakaolin and limestone and its effect in porosity refinement and mechanical properties

Franco Zunino et al.

Summary: In limestone calcined clay cements (LC3), a higher amount of hemicarboaluminate and monocarboaluminate is observed compared to other blended cements, due to the reaction of metakaolin with limestone. The formation of these carboaluminate phases mainly occurs during a third hydration peak, which is influenced by metakaolin content, sulfate addition level, and water to binder ratio. The precipitation of these carboaluminates significantly affects porosity refinement and strength development, while alumina from metakaolin can also contribute to the precipitation of ettringite in the presence of sufficient sulfate.

Evolution of tricalcium silicate (C3S) hydration based on image analysis of microstructural observations obtained via Field's metal intrusion

Yanming Liu et al.

Summary: This study focused on the detailed microstructural analysis of the hydration process of C3S, a simplified model of cementitious material. It was found that the length of a metastable barrier in the BSE images correlated well with the hydration rate of C3S, and the hydration process caused significant changes in the pore size and profile of C3S pastes, with the critical pore size for limiting hydration identified as 4 μm. Additionally, C3S samples were observed to reach 80% hydration at 7 days, with continuous development of pore structure thereafter despite similar porosity and hydration levels.

Summary: Limestone Calcined Clay Cements (LC3) can reduce the clinker factor by 50%, leading to a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions. The study found that mechanical strength can be maintained after one week and that porosity and pore connectivity decrease with hydration time. Multiple techniques were used to analyze phase and microstructure developments.
