Tissue-specific engineering: 3D bioprinting in regenerative medicine

Zhen Wang et al.

Summary: The human body is composed of four basic tissue types: epithelial, connective, muscular, and nervous tissues, each consisting of cells with similar functions. Three-dimensional bioprinting, based on histological categories, is a versatile technology that can form functional organ structures simply. This technology shows remarkable regenerative power and novel breakthroughs in specific tissues like muscle and nerve tissues.

3D Printing of Bioinspired Alginate-Albumin Based Instant Gel Ink with Electroconductivity and Its Expansion to Direct Four-Axis Printing of Hollow Porous Tubular Constructs without Supporting Materials

Gopinathan Janarthanan et al.

Summary: By combining polysaccharide-tannic acid-protein bioconjugate, a novel hydrogel ink is successfully developed with 3D printability, shear-thinning, electroconductivity, multiple crosslinking mechanisms, and cytocompatibility without the use of chemical crosslinking agents. This offers promising results for addressing challenges in 3D printing.

Bioprinting a Multifunctional Bioink to Engineer Clickable 3D Cellular Niches with Tunable Matrix Microenvironmental Cues

Ruben F. Pereira et al.

Summary: A multifunctional bioink was designed in this study to control cell fate through independent manipulation of biochemical and biophysical cues in extrusion bioprinting. The rheology of the bioink was controlled by manipulating ionic gelation, while the mechanical and biochemical properties of hydrogels were tailored through post-printing thiol-ene reaction. The bioink can be used for building functional cell- and tissue-specific constructs with controlled cellular behavior.
