Simple Approach to Macrocyclic Carbonates with Fast Polymerization Rates and Their Polymer-to-Monomer Regeneration

Jin Huang et al.

Summary: Designing polymeric materials for closed-loop material streams is crucial for achieving a circular society. In this study, a library of macrocyclic carbonates (MCs) was synthesized using a simple one-pot, two-step method without solvents. The anionic polymerization of MCs with tert-butoxide catalyst exhibited ultrafast ring-opening polymerization (ROP) with high conversion rates (>97%) at ambient temperature. The polymerization rate depended on the number of methylene groups between the carbonate linkages, resulting in an odd-even effect. The regenerated polymers could be converted back to their original MCs with high selectivity (95-99 mol %) and good yields (70-85%), contributing to the development of a closed-loop system for long alkyl chain polycarbonates.
