Unique surface patterns emerging during solidification of liquid metal alloys

Jianbo Tang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the emergence of highly ordered nanopatterns on the alloy surfaces during solidification in the Bi-Ga alloy system. The pattern-formation mechanisms involving surface-catalyzed heterogeneous nucleation were elucidated through a combination of experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. The dynamic nature and robustness of the phenomenon under different solidification conditions and for various alloy systems were further demonstrated, showing promising potential for surface- and nanoscale-based applications.

Toward Printed Molecular Electronics: Direct Printing of Liquid Metal Microelectrode on Self-Assembled Monolayers

Seo Eun Byeon et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the successful fabrication of arrays of molecular tunnel junctions via automated direct printing of liquid-metal microelectrodes onto self-assembled monolayers, achieving high yields of working junctions and reproducibility in tunneling performance. The printed molecular junctions exhibit exponential decay of current density according to the Simmons model, with a single distribution of current density.

General Programmable Growth of Hybrid Core-Shell Nanostructures with Liquid Metal Nanodroplets

Long Ren et al.

Summary: This study presents a general route for programmable preparation of complex core-shell nanostructures using liquid metal droplets as reformable templates. By triggering a localized galvanic replacement reaction in an ultrasonication system, high-level compositional diversity control and quantitative regulation of both the core and shell layers of the heterogeneous products are achieved, offering a method that cannot be realized with a solid-template synthetic route.

High-mobility p-type semiconducting two-dimensional β-TeO2

Ali Zavabeti et al.

Summary: Bilayer beta tellurium dioxide nanosheets were successfully synthesized through surface oxidation of tellurium and selenium mixture, demonstrating high-mobility p-type semiconductor properties. These nanosheets have potential applications in transistor fabrication, showing p-type switching with a high on/off ratio and field-effect hole mobility of up to 232 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) at room temperature. The carrier mobility reached even higher values of 6,000 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) on cooling to -50 degrees C, indicating promising prospects for high-speed and energy-efficient transparent electronics.

Liquid metal batteries for future energy storage

Shilin Zhang et al.

Summary: The search for alternatives to traditional Li-ion batteries has led to the development of rechargeable liquid metal batteries, which operate at room or intermediate temperatures to address challenges related to high temperature operation, corrosive reactions, and hermetic sealing. These new paradigms aim to overcome drawbacks of conventional liquid metal batteries and enable both conventional and new functionalities by applying alternative electrodes, manipulating electrolyte design concepts, and engineering electrode-electrolyte interfaces.
