Semiconducting Polymers for Oxygen Evolution Reaction under Light Illumination

Yuanxing Fang et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the photocatalytic technologies and materials of polymeric photocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Two practical systems, namely particle suspension and film-based photoelectrochemical systems, are discussed. The concept is reviewed in terms of thermodynamics and kinetics, and the key characteristics of polymeric photocatalysts, such as light absorption, charge separation and transfer, and surface oxidation reactions, are examined. Satisfactory OER performance by polymeric photocatalysts could lead to cost-effective, sustainable, and renewable water splitting and other advanced applications using solar energy.

Uracil-Doped Graphitic Carbon Nitride for Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance

Xiaohui Zhan et al.

Summary: In this study, a highly efficient nonmetallic photocatalyst U-C3N4 doped with uracil was successfully developed, which showed improved catalytic activity compared to pristine g-C3N4. The new electron-transfer pathway and larger specific surface area of U-C3N4 allowed for enhanced separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and inhibition of recombination, leading to better performance in hydrogen evolution and degradation of rhodamine B. Additionally, the uracil-doped catalyst exhibited good stability after multiple runs.

Visible-Light Carbon Nitride-Catalyzed Aerobic Cyclization of Thiobenzanilides under Ambient Air Conditions

Jin Bai et al.

Summary: A metal-free heterogeneous photocatalysis using inexpensive graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has been developed for the synthesis of benzothiazoles via intramolecular C-H functionalization/C-S bond formation of thiobenzanilides under visible-light irradiation. This reaction provides high yields of 2-substituted benzothiazoles without the need for a strong base or organic oxidizing reagents, and the catalyst is stable and reusable after five reaction cycles.

C-, N-Vacancy defect engineered polymeric carbon nitride towards photocatalysis: viewpoints and challenges

Abhinandan Kumar et al.

Summary: Graphite-like carbon nitride (g-C3N4; GCN) is a metal-free polymeric semiconductor material with fascinating physicochemical and photoelectronic structural features, yet its wide-range applicability is limited by inherent drawbacks such as rapid reassembly of photocarriers and low specific surface area. Introducing vacancies into the framework of GCN to generate 0D point defects has shown potential in manipulating optical absorption, radiative carrier isolation, and surface photoreactions. Various advanced strategies for controlled designing of vacancy-rich GCN have been explored, highlighting the significance of defect engineering on optical absorption, charge isolation, and surface photoreaction ability in GCN. Applications of defect engineered GCN include photocatalytic water splitting, CO2 conversion, N-2 fixation, pollutant degradation, and H2O2 production.
