Hybrid Porphyrin/DOPA-melanin film as self-assembled material and smart device for dye-pollutant removal in water

Massimiliano Gaeta et al.

Summary: Mussels-inspired melanin coatings from L-DOPA are gaining attention due to their easy synthesis and low-cost production. However, the spontaneous deposition of DOPA-melanin is affected by experimental factors, limiting the preparation of robust adhesive films for practical use. We have developed a feasible method to functionalize an ordinary glass substrate with a self-assembled and homogeneous DOPA-melanin film. By introducing H2TCPPspm4 porphyrin, a hybrid film with 20% enhancement in adsorption capacity is obtained. The hybrid system shows significant reusability for dye-adsorption cycles, indicating potential for a smart, reusable, and scalable water remediation device.

Self-Assembled Chiral Phosphorescent Microflowers from Au Nanoclusters with Dual-Mode pH Sensing and Information Encryption

Jinglin Shen et al.

Summary: The self-assembly of chiral metal nanoclusters into ordered microstructures with enhanced phosphorescence and optical activities was achieved by manipulating Au nanoclusters modified by L-/D-cysteine. The compact aggregation structures were essential for emission enhancement and chirality amplification, with the microflowers exhibiting pH-responsiveness. Additionally, the pH-responsive photoluminescence ON/OFF switch of the microflowers could be utilized for reliable information encryption and decryption.

Photoluminescence-enhanced cholesteric films: Coassembling copper nanoclusters with cellulose nanocrystals

Mingye Liu et al.

Summary: Iridescent and luminescent composite films were successfully fabricated by incorporating glutathione-stabilized copper nanoclusters into cellulose nanocrystal films using a coassembly strategy. The composite films displayed broadband reflection and enhanced fluorescence, with color and intensity tunable by adjusting reaction conditions. These films were utilized to create LEDs with custom colors and patterns.

A Green and Iridescent Composite of Cellulose Nanocrystals with Wide Solvent Resistance and Strong Mechanical Properties

Kai Feng et al.

Summary: In this study, iridescent and hydrophilic CNCs films were transformed into films with excellent water resistance and resistance to strongly acidic or basic aqueous solutions and various organic solvents by co-assembling with oxidized starch (OS) and tannic acid (TA). The composite films maintained structural integrity and vibrant color even after immersion in water for 24 hours. The cross-linking via hydrogen bonds with tannic acid significantly improved solvent resistance and mechanical properties of CNCs films, expanding their applications in harsh conditions.
