Mechanism of Pterostilbene-Induced Cell Death in HT-29 Colon Cancer Cells

Joanna Wawszczyk et al.

Summary: Pterostilbene, a dietary phytochemical, has been found to possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and shows potential as an anticancer agent. This study aimed to investigate the anticancer activity of pterostilbene against HT-29 human colon cancer cells and revealed that it inhibits cell proliferation and induces cell death. The effects of pterostilbene on cell cycle progression and signaling pathways were also evaluated. The down-regulation of STAT3 and AKT kinase pathways was found to mediate the anticancer activity of pterostilbene. These findings suggest that pterostilbene could be a promising therapeutic option for colon cancer in the future.

Efficacy of pterostilbene suppression of postharvest gray mold in table grapes and potential mechanisms

Dandan Xu et al.

Summary: The study shows that 0.25 g/L pterostilbene can suppress the development of gray mold in table grapes. Fluorescent staining indicates that disease suppression with pterostilbene is mediated through loss of plasma membrane integrity. Electron microscopy reveals that pterostilbene inhibits B. cinerea by altering the morphology of the hyphae and conidiophores, leading to destruction of the plasma membrane and organelles. Additionally, quantitative real-time PCR highlights gene modulation by pterostilbene, overexpressing genes associated with laccase production and cellular damage on B. cinerea, along with increased laccase activity.

Characterization the performances of twofold resveratrol integrated compounds in binding with SIRT1 by molecular dynamics simulation and molecular mechanics/generalized born surface area (MM/GBSA) calculation

Shanshan Shi et al.

Summary: By linking the structures of resveratrol molecules RSV1 and RSV2, four novel SIRT1 activators were constructed, two of which showed higher binding interaction with SIRT1 compared to RSV1, 2, and significantly promoted the binding of p53-AMC peptide to SIRT1. These findings suggest potential for the rational design of more promising SIRT1 activators in the future.

Impact of Environmental Factors on Stilbene Biosynthesis

Alessio Valletta et al.

Summary: Stilbenes, particularly trans-resveratrol, are important polyphenolic secondary metabolites with health properties in plants. Environmental factors play crucial roles in regulating stilbene biosynthesis. Understanding the biosynthetic pathway of stilbenes and their environmental regulation can help increase the accumulation of these valuable compounds.

Three Types of Elicitors Induce Grapevine Resistance against Downy Mildew via Common and Specific Immune Responses

Aleksandra Burdziej et al.

Summary: Three recognized plant defense stimulators (PDS), methyl jasmonate (MeJA), benzothiadiazole (BTH) and phosphonates (PHOS), were shown to confer resistance to the biotrophic pathogen Plasmopara viticola when sprayed on grapevine Vitis vinifera cuttings. The effects on molecular defense-related genes and polyphenol content were observed, with specific signaling pathways for each elicitor and some cross-talks. These results provide evidence of the different modes of action of PDS in sustainable viticulture.

Pterostilbene inhibits gallbladder cancer progression by suppressing the PI3K/Akt pathway

Chenhao Tong et al.

Summary: Pterostilbene (PTS) shows potential as a drug for treating gallbladder cancer by inhibiting cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, inducing apoptosis, and reversing epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) through PI3K/Akt signaling inhibition. Tumor xenograft models also demonstrate PTS's ability to inhibit tumor growth with low toxicity, consistent with in vitro data.

Byoungjin Park et al.

Summary: The study showed that oral administration of pterostilbene significantly increased the time spent in open field and forced swimming tests in mice, elevated BDNF levels, reduced levels of inflammatory markers in the brain, and decreased plasma hormone levels related to stress. Pterostilbene also increased neuron numbers and reduced glial cell and inflammatory marker-labeled cell numbers in the hypothalamus, indicating its potential in modulating stress-related behaviors, neuroinflammation, and HPA axis hyperactivity.
