Neuropsychological abilities underpinning academic attainment in children born extremely preterm

Jayne Trickett et al.

Summary: This study found that verbal working memory, visuospatial working memory, visuospatial processing, and verbal processing speed were important mediators in the relationship between extremely preterm birth and academic reading attainment, while attention was not significant. All five neuropsychological abilities together explained 44% of the variance in reading and 52% of the variance in mathematics. Results showed that the direct impact of extremely preterm birth on mathematics and reading attainment was small, with visuospatial processing being the strongest mediator for both subjects.

Creating an optimal observational sleep stage classification system for very and extremely preterm infants

E. R. de Groot et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop a new, easy-to-use method for observing sleep-wake stages in preterm infants with a gestational age between 25 and 37 weeks. The results show that the method has high reliability and validity, and can be used in all age groups of preterm infants.

Actigraphy: Metrics reveal it is not a valid tool for determining sleep in neonates

Matthew Derbin et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the validity of actigraphy in detecting sleep in preterm infants and found that while it had high sensitivity for detecting sleep, its specificity and discriminatory power for wake were low. The lack of sufficient autonomous wake periods among infants was identified as a key limitation in using actigraphy for Sleep/Wake discrimination in preterm infants.

Maternal perinatal depression and infant sleep problems at 1 year of age: Subjective and actigraphy data from a population-based birth cohort study

Camila S. Halal et al.

Summary: This study found that maternal depression in the perinatal period is associated with poor infant sleep, with an increased risk of night wakings reported by depressed mothers. However, this association was only seen in questionnaire data, not in actigraphy data. Factors such as dysfunctional cognition, maternal behavioral factors, and sleep impairment may influence how depressed mothers perceive their infant's sleep quality.

Gestational age at birth and child special educational needs: a UK representative birth cohort study

Summary: The study found that children born prematurely are more likely to have special educational needs (SEN), especially those born before 32 weeks. Additionally, both preterm and early term births (37-38 weeks) are associated with an increased risk of SEN.

The relationship between preterm birth and sleep in children at school age: A systematic review

Simone S. M. Visser et al.

Summary: The study found that preterm birth is associated with sleep problems in children, including earlier bedtimes and lower sleep quality with more nocturnal awakenings and non-rapid eye movement stage 2 sleep. Future research should use consistent outcome measures to better understand the mechanisms influencing sleep in preterm children.

Sleep patterns, problems, and ecology in young children born preterm and full-term and their mothers

Francesca Lupini et al.

Summary: The study found that preterm and full-term infants were similar in most sleep parameters and sleep ecology, but preterm infants were more likely to be held to initiate sleep and given a bottle to resume sleep, while full-term infants were more likely to be breastfed to resume sleep. Maternal sleep parameters were similar between the two groups.

The value of cardiorespiratory parameters for sleep state classification in preterm infants: A systematic review

Eline R. de Groot et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of cardiorespiratory parameters for sleep state classification in preterm infants and found that in quiet sleep, respiratory frequency is more stable and heart rate is lower and less variable. Different subtypes of preterm infants showed variations in this association, indicating that maturation influences the cardiorespiratory characteristics of preterm sleep states.

Non-contact Sleep/Wake Monitoring Using Impulse-Radio Ultrawideband Radar in Neonates

Won Hyuk Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigated the possibility of quantitatively distinguishing and measuring sleep/wake states in neonates using IR-UWB radar technology and compared its accuracy with behavioral observation-based sleep/wake analyses. The results showed that the radar technology can provide considerable accuracy regarding sleep/wake decisions in neonates, demonstrating the feasibility of its use in the NICU for the first time. This unobtrusive, non-contact radar technology is a promising method for monitoring sleep/wake states with vital signs in neonates.

Summary: EEG is a reference tool for analyzing brain function, reflecting neuronal network activity. EEG patterns evolve weekly during the neonatal period according to gestational age.
